Teaching The Parable Of The Seed And The Sower - For Kids

This first Sunday school lesson of a series about the parable of the sower will help the children discover how truly wonderful the Word of God is, and how we must keep it close to our hearts with truth and understanding. Between Jesus teaching the parable and explaining it to the disciples Jesus tells them that the difference in people's response is not the result of their efforts or the brilliance of their ministry strategy or the skill of their oratory, but rather the sovereign grace of God.
But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

The seed in the rocks is like a person who hears the Word of God and gets excited about it, but because it doesn't go deep down into their hearts, when bad things happen, or when something else comes along that excites them, they forget what they've heard.
We know this is an important story because at one point Jesus says, (refer to the verse on the board) He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” It is The Parable of the Sower like Jesus was saying, Hey, if you can understand - if you have ears that will hear and understand - then listen up!” Let's read what Jesus said.

The person whose heart is like the good soil hears the good news about God and receives it. He bears fruit, more than what was planted. He who opens people's ears so that they hear the word and treasure Jesus above all else. The soil is your heart. Also, use this time to take the topic where the students want to go. Pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal to them what truths he wants them to learn from the story, and help them understand how this story can be applied to their lives.
Today, we are going to learn about a story - or parable - that Jesus told that compares the Word of God to seed. As people work, encourage them to talk about the story they have just heard. If you want to make the sower bag, or a basket, you can use these seeds to 'toss' to the kids.

He prayed for people and God heard and answered Jesus' prayers. Kids need bite-sized pieces of God's Word. Say: Jesus tells us that the seed is God's Word. Finally, some seed fell on the good soil that had been plowed, fertilized, and weeded to make a good place for the seed to grow. After Jesus told a parable he would explain what it meant, but he only told people that were his real friends and really wanted to know him better.
